The Nigerian Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, NIEEE can be considered the first born of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) due to her many lead actions to professionalize the electrical engineering profession among the engineering family called Divisions. The Nigerian Society of Engineers was formally established in 1958 as an umbrella organization for the professional development of all engineering disciplines. The Society was inaugurated on 16th of February 1958 in London, United Kingdom and Mr G.O Aiwerioba was elected President. The formal inauguration of the NSE in Nigeria took place on 19th January, 1959 in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
In 1986, some eminent Electrical and Electronic Engineers led by Engr. Dr. Olusegun Ayaji, FNSE, FNIEEE championed and pioneered the formation of the first professional Division of NSE. Dr Ajayi, now a Past President of the NSE, subsequently became the first Chairman of the Electrical Division now Institute.
On 12th October 2006 at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the then Electrical Division, members unanimously voted to change the name of the Division to “The Nigerian Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (NIEEE)”. The name was approved by the Council of the Nigerian Society of Engineers in January 2007, making the NIEEE again the first Institution to be so recognized by the NSE.
On 6th December 2012 at Ilorin Ordinary General Meeting (OGM), Engr Adekunle Makinde FNSE, FNIEEE, then National Chairman, constituted a committee with the mandate to charter the Institution. The committee members included:
- Engr. Sunday Oguntunde, FNIEEE (Lagos)
- Engr. Friday Ojone Ukwela, MNIEEE (Abuja)
- Engr. Alex N. Akoriegyah, MNIEEE (Benue)
- Engr. Isaac Odeyemi, MNIEEE (Abuja)
- Engr. Abdulahi Tahir MNIEEE (Abeokuta)
- Engr. Akan Michael, FNIEEE (Lagos)
Later on, Engr Adeleye Adegboyega, FNIEEE, (Lagos) was added to the committee to enable those in Lagos drive the process to bridge the ensuing distance and communication gaps observed then.
One of the requirements for the charter target, was for the Institution to register with the Corporate Affairs Commission. While the process had begun and got stuck, the hurdles of registration were surmounted during the tenure of Engr Emmanuel Akinwole, FNIEEE a Past National Chairman (Past President). By 24th September 2018, the certificate was ready and was received by the then National Chairman (Past President), Engr John Funso-Adebayo, FNIEEE. This transformed the Nigerian Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, NIEEE to the Nigerian Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, NIEEE.
On assumption of office as National Chairman (President) in 2020 despite COVID-19 lockdown, Engr Kings Adeyemi, FNIEEE continued the process towards the charter target, by taking a Bill to establish the Chartered Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of Nigeria (CIEEEN) to the Red Chamber through Senator Sadiq Suleiman Umar (Senator representing Kwara North Senatorial District) who was the sponsor of the Bill. On Thursday, 9th December 2021, the Senate Committee on Establishment and Public Service held a Public Hearing on the Bill. All members of the National Executive Committee with the tenacity of the Executive Secretary of the Institute worked assiduously to complete the process. These include:
- Engr Akan Michael FNIEEE (Past President)
- Felix O. Olu FNIEEE (President)
- Barnabas Gwaivangmin FNIEEE
- Felix Adegboye FNIEEE
- Abdullahi T. Sulaiman FNIEEE
- Terab Ibn Ali MNIEEE
- Oto-Obong John Effiong FNIEEE
- Bayo Olusodo FNIEEE
- Simeon Isibor FNIEEE
- Kings Adeyemi FNIEEE (Immediate Past President)
After the two Chambers of the National Assembly passed the Bill, it was signed into law on 11th April 2023, thereby bringing into existence, an Act establishing the Chartered Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of Nigeria (CIEEEN), the first of its kind in engineering history in Nigeria. You can download a copy of the CIEEEN Act from the Library of this website.
Presently, NIEEE has 35 inaugurated Chapters spread across the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria.
The NIEEE has been building the professional capacity of members through various technical forums such as the flagship programs – International Conference and Exhibition on Power and Telecommunication (ICEPT); National Webinars; Distinguished Electrical and Electronic Engineering Award Laureate (DEEEAL) and many other activities spearheaded by our chapters.
The President of the Institute directs all the affairs within and outside the institute. He is the Head of the National Executive Committee and the Chairman-in-Council at every Governing Council meeting.
The President presides at every Ordinary General Meeting, Annual General Meeting of the Institute. The President holds for a period of two years and is succeeded by the Deputy President. The Deputy President is elected every two years, who automatically becomes the President after the expiration of the two-year tenure of the predecessor.
The National Executive Committee (NEC) Members discuss and implement the policies of the institute. The Executive Committee (EXCO) of the Institute is responsible for overseeing the management and administration of the affairs of the Institute. The EXCO is made up of the President, Deputy President, Six Vice Presidents and any Co-opted member(s) with the Executive Secretary as the Secretary of the NEC, the latter being elected at every Annual General Meetings every year with the exception of the President.
