“THE RIGHT THING” The Nigerian Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (NIEEE) has evolved in the nearly 40 years of its existence into the institute of the first choice and it is such a beautiful thing that I am being bestowed with the responsibility to lead this great Institute for the next two years. I want to thank every member of this institute for the trust and confidence reposed in me at this time. Despite the challenging situation faced by our nation, I considered it an auspicious time to push our dream and aspirations as a people to address these challenges. In a stable and progressive organization driven by vision, mission and strategic long-term plan, governance is a continuum. It would be agreed by all, that there are long standing projects the Institute has committed itself to some 7 to 10 years ago still work in progress. Such projects include getting the Bill for an Act to establish Chartered Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of Nigeria 2021 (S.B 741) signed into law, commencing construction at our permanent secretariat at Tunga Maje, Gwagwalada Area Council, Abuja, inauguration of chapters not only in all state capitals but major cities across the country and institution of higher learning, automation of administration process, engagement of members in standards development with Standards Organisation of Nigeria and empowerment of members through training and creation of opportunities for better wellbeing. We have to either complete these projects or consolidate on them. I will leave every communication concise and actionable and our slogan shall be THE RIGHT THING (Doing the right thing – deals with safety) and (Knowing the right thing to do – deals with competence) We shall take ownership of our profession not only by becoming chartered but through training and re-training and adherence to standards. Thus, we shall bring all our members to our fold so as to address quackery and professional misapplication of knowledge. We have a formidable governance structure in our Constitution which was test run the past two years. We have noticed some minor flaws which a committee was set up to review. The gray areas will be amended for the general house to adopt. At this juncture, I call on all of us to roll up our sleeves and be ready for the task ahead. When your servant knocks at your door for wisdom and support, be ready to grant same. I owe you all a debt that cannot be paid in eternity for your show of love, support and prayers. May the good Lord repay you with His immeasurable blessings. Long Live NIEEE! Long Live Nigeria! Engr Akan Michael, FNIEEE National Chairman, NIEEE
